Wayne D. Moore (right) received NFPA's Standards Medal, the highest award presented by NFPA's Standards Council for outstanding contributions to fire safety in the development of codes and standards. The award was presented by Jim Pauley, Vice President, Industry and Government Relations of Schneider Electric/Square D Company, and Chair of the NFPA Standards Council.

Craig Beyler of Hughes Associates, Inc. has agreed to deliver The Institution of Fire Engineers' 2009 Rasbash Lecture on the theme "A Review of Fire Suppression Science and Engineering, Firepoint Theory and Beyond".

Fire Protection Research Foundation names Hughes Engineer award recipient
The Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF), announced that HAI engineer Joseph Scheffey is the winner of the William M. Carey Award for the best paper on fire suppression presented at SUPDET 2008, the Foundation's annual technical working conference on suppression and detection research and applications. Winners for best presentation at the previous year's conference are chosen based on a vote by participants and awards are given the following year. The paper, Report on an Effort to Evaluate and Develop Methodologies for Calculating Firefighting Agent Quantities Needed to Combat Aircraft Fires, was authored by Mr. Scheffey. and Keith Bagot of the Federal Aviation Administration. The award was presented to Mr. Scheffey by Casey Grant, Technical Director of the FPRF, at SUPDET Conference held this February in Orlando, Florida.
The William M. Carey award was established in 2001 to recognize the most outstanding presentation at the suppression and detection conference. Two awards were traditionally given: one in the suppression category and one in the detection category. William M. Carey, P.E., was a senior staff engineer at Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. Carey made many major contributions to new fire suppression technologies and served on various technical advisory committees on the Foundation.
Wayne D. Moore of Hughes Associates, Inc. has been named a Fellow member of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).

Hughes Associates, Inc. (HAI) is pleased to announce that the patent "Identification of Fire Signatures for Shipboard Multi-Criteria Fire Detection Systems" will receive the 2006 Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Edison Award. Daniel T. Gottuk, Ph.D., P.E., Senior Engineer with HAI, is a co-inventor for this patent along with his NRL colleagues. The annual award recognizes significant contributions to science and engineering as represented by patents issued by NRL which are perceived to have the greatest potential benefit to the country.
