Accurately modeling the fire suppression effects of sprinklers and water mist on specific fuels is at the edge of the capabilities of current CFD programs. HAI has developed zone models for water mist in machinery spaces involving liquid hydrocarbon pool and spray fires, and CFD algorithms for the suppression effects of sprinklers on fires involving rack storage of commodities in cardboard cartons in warehouses. We know how to characterize sprays and we routinely run CFD simulations which demonstrate the cooling effects of water sprays with different characteristics in the affected spaces. We have experience modeling the suppression effects of water mist against hydrocarbon spill fires and wood pallets in tunnels under varying ventilation conditions.
