Performance based fire protection and post-fire analyses both benefit from the application of state-of-the-art fire modeling technologies. Hughes Associates is a global leader in the application of fire modeling to fire protection. Hughes Associates' researchers routinely contribute to the development of new fire modeling technologies.

FSSIM, Fire and Smoke SIMulator, is a network fire model recently developed by Hughes Associates. This model is capable of simulating fire and smoke spread through very large structures, including complex HVAC systems. Initially developed to support modeling and simulation needs of the US Navy, the model is also available for use for non-naval applications. Simulations of buildings containing thousands of rooms with multiple HVAC systems are easily achieved with FSSIM. FSSIM has been formally accredited by the US Navy's Program Executive Office for Carriers for use in predicting fire spread and smoke movement.
