Modeling

Hughes Associates, Inc. (HAI) is experienced in a wide variety of fire models, including both zone and field models, used to assist in fire protection systems design, smoke control system evaluation for large volume spaces (i.e. atriums), and in support of our litigation support efforts. We have also applied advanced fire modeling in the evaluation of facilities to withstand chemical and biological attack. HAI's engineers utilize a variety of model types including egress, fire and smoke, and hydraulic models. In fact, the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) chose HAI as a “beta tester” for the recently released Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) model developed.

The FDS model has been used by HAI to support the use of Performance Based Design methodologies for both new and existing facilities, to obtain building code equivalencies from Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), and to provide greater design freedom for the architect, engineer or other design professional. Models can help eliminate redundant fire protection and life safety features, thereby creating a cost savings for the owner, and helping resolve issues that are not addressed in the prescriptive codes.
